Depending on your intent of the safari, you will get highlight of each destination and what to expect.

Kenya is one of the leading destinations in the world to travel especially for bush and beach holidays. In addition, it has great combination of food and culture, owing to the people living in Kenya. The most common language spoke in Kenya is Swahili and English, so it is unlikely to have language barrier if you are coming from English speaking countries.

If you are from non- English speaking countries, you need not to worry. Most local tour and travel companies can organize for guides who speaks your local languages, be it French, Italy, German or Japanese. This will not only make your safari enjoyable but you will be free to even understand Kenya culture and wildlife inspirations better.

Why 3 weeks is the ideal duration for a Kenya safari

In most cases, I get friends thinking about going to Kenya for a lifetime safari but they don’t know what the ideal number of days they need looks like. In as much as there are many factors that can contribute to the choice of number of days such as budget, a 3 weeks safari means you get to cover everything that you may need while in Kenya for safari.

A 3 weeks Kenya safari is an ideal duration since it will allow you to have ample time to experience Kenya’s diverse ecosystmen without any rush.

4 Days Amboseli Pure Adventure

With the 21 Days Safari, the gap between having wildlife safari and beach vacation will be easily bridged.Whereas Most itineraries focuses on Nairobi to Masai Mara and that is the end, you definately will not have enough time to experience Kenya safari in its entiety.

In a nut shell, Kenya has over 50+ destinations to explore, both national parks and game reserves, The Big Five, Great Migration, Great Lakes, Deserts and also sandy coastlines for relaxation.

Having to fit this into a way that makes sense logistically is normally the hardest part of all.

Is 3 Weeks Kenya Safari Enough?

Are you interested in visiting all the parks found in Kenya? Well, a 3 weeks Kenya safari will definately not be anough to have it all. However, with 3 weeks for Kenya safari, you will have a chance of visiting some of the most important parks in Kenya including Masai Mara,Lake Naivasha, Amboseli, Mount Kenya, Ol Pejeta, Tsavo East, Tsavo West and Diani.

3 weeks Safari in Kenya will definately have more to have than the most usual Kenya safari tours such as 5 Days Masai Mara, 7 Days Trip and even a 10 Days Kenya safari Trip.

It is an ideal duration to take home with you the best of Kenya unforgettable memories.

How Much Does a 3 Weeks Kenya Safari Tour Cost in 2026/27?

From my personal experience with hundling hundreds of safaris and offering expert advice, a typical 3 weeks Kenya safari normally costs anything between $4,000 and $15000 per person depending on the type of safari.

This amount will averange into between $200 and $700 per day with factors such as type of transport and accommodation being the key determinants of the amount to be paid.

In this guide, i will assist you to know the best way in which you can have the best experience while saving the most out of your safari budget.

Cost Breakdown by Style

Budget Camping( $4,000 -$6500)

In most cases, the budget camping safari types would in most cases focus on basic group sharing tours, transportation in overland our safari van and even basic accommodation options.

Daily Average: $150- $250 per person.

3 Weeks Cost: Up to $6,500

Inclusions: Mostly public campsites, accommodation( Basic level), Transportation in Tour Van or Overland, Meals, Game drives and a Guide.

What will bring my overall cost Down?

Group Size: The size of group that you are opting to go for safari with is one of the main determinants of the cost that you will pay for the safari.Typically, with a larger group will mean that the cost of transport is shared among all of you. Therefore, the more the group size, the lower the cost that will be transfered to you.

A Safari Lancruiser normally takes upto a maximum of 8 people in one vehicle.

Seasonality: Another factor that affects the cost in which you will pay for safari is seasonality.(July-Oct) is normally peak season and this means that most of the parks are crowded, hence high demand and low hotel availability. This is because of the Great Migration which normally happens once in a year.During this time, you are likely to pay double the amount that you will pay for accommodation during low seasons.

If you have budget constraints, i highly encourage you to opt for low and shoulder seasons when the parks are less crowded and the accommodation and park fees are more affordable.

Vehicle Choice: Choosing your means of transport appropriately would mean that you pay less for your safari. The most affordable type of transportation is a top roof van whereas for a safari jeep, you might have to add an additional $50-$100 on top.

Day 2: Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve

At around 7- 8 am in the morning, your dedicated tour guide from Adequate Safaris will be at the hotel ready to pick you up for Masai Mara.

It normally takes 5-6 hours from Nairobi to Masai Mara, with stop overs at Great Rift Valley view point and possibly Narok town.

You will arrive at your lodge at 2pm or thereabout. From my experience, it is always adviced that you have accommodation inside the park and at the conservancies, just near the main reserve.

While at Masai Mara, we stayed at Fairmont Masai Mara which is located at the Ol Choro Oiroiwa Conservancy which is found in the Northwestern part of Masai Mara.We were able to do night game drives, visit Rhino sanctuary which is an added advantage as compared if we had booked for lodge outside the park.

It also allows for night game drives which is an experience of its own, definately something you will never forget.

The experience was great for photography and the side of park was less crowded, meaning better experience on wildlife viewing. With all the experience that we took home with us, the only downside was that the hotel was quite pricier. In my opinion, i would reccomend booking earlier enough since most of the hotels inside park and in the conservancies get fully booked fast as from June.

If you are booking your stay through local operator, you can seek advice to see option of Pay 3 Stay 4 as most of the hotels also have those options, which is a plus for you.

If in case you are budget sensitive, then i reccomend to have Maisha Mara or Emaiyan Luxury Camp as options as they are some of the best just close to the Masai Mara gate (7-10 minutes drive). The approximate cost is $250 nightly yet they offer ultimate luxury experience.

NB: Once you have booked accommodations on Full Board, it means that you will enjoy breakfast, Lunch and Dinner at the hotel. For All Inclusive option, there is option of select alcoholic drinks and beers that will be availed during your stay.

After lunch, you can opt to relax for few hours then head out for your first game drive at 4.00pm.This is actually the best time to spot wildlife since the temperature has cooled down making the animals to be more active.

On your first game drive, your guide will drive though the vast savannah plains while in search of wildlife such as lions, leopards and herds of elephants.

If in case you are planning to visit Kenya for safari between July and August, it will be a great oppotunity for you to witness the great migration, where by millions of Wildebeests cross Mara river in search of pasture.

While on game drive, from my experience, you will stay until when the sun touches down, showcasing golden sky on the vast savannah. This is an ideal time for you to have sundowner while refreshing the encounters you have made so far and the best part is that it is just but the begining!

The park gates normally closes at 6pm.You will exit as you are driven to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

If time allows or you are still in good shape, you can opt to go for bonfire and catch up with other travelers while doing one or two beers. In some of the hotels, you will get to be entertained by the local masai men and women. This is the interesting bit in your 3 weeks Kenya safari.

Thereafter, return to your room for overnight.

Day 3: Masai Mara Full Day

On this day, plan earlier so that you can rise very early in the morning for a full day game drive. The morning hours are normally ideal as its the best time to spot predators hunting for their prey before the sun gets hotter.

Ensure that you have your breakfast packed so that you can have it in the bush, we normally call it Bush Breakfast. The morning hours is always ideal for spectacular sunrise views and i would reccomend visiting Musiera swamp during the morning hours.

Later on, return to the lodge for Lunch and late in the morning an thereafter relaxation. In as much as most people opt for full game drive and packed lunch, others prefers to have morning and evening game drives only.

masai mara
The annual Great Migration of wildebeest and other grazing herbivores across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem is one of the greatest spectacles in the natural world. About 200 000 zebra and 500 000 Thomson’s gazelle …and one-and-a-half million wildebeest partake to this journey !

In most of the cases in the park, the animal rests in the afternoon due to escape the mid day hot sun.

An optional activity that i can reccomend in the afternoon is to visit a nearby Masai village for cultural tour. The normal charges are $20-$30 for visit whereby the Masais will show your their homes, how the light fire and also the cultral dances( Jumping so high- be prepared to join them)

At around 4pm, resume your game drives.During this time, have your camera ready for abundant wildlife. While in Mara, you will be able to witness thousands of Wildebeest, Hundreds of elephants among othe animals. If lucky, you will witness Leopard or cheetah hunting for its prey.

Evenings in Mara is just in another world for photography. This is the time that most animaks become active again.

At around 6pm, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Masai Mara

First thing in the morning even before sunrise you will be on the road as you drive across the vast topi plains, which is a perfect places for scanning wildlife over the open plains. If you are a bird lover, then you will witness different varieties of birds during every move.

If in case you are a bird lover, then you definately will come across hundreds of birds including lillac breasted rollers, secretary birds, crowned cranes among others. This time is just the perfect one for photography, carrying home unlimited memories of Masai Mara with you.

If in case you are in a conservancy, you can opt to have night game drives, just after dinner. This is a great oppotunity to spot aardwolves, genets, white tailed mangoose and porcupines.

If you are not inside the park, you will not be allowed to go on night game drives inside the National Reserve.

As you exit the park, the terrain is rough and expect it to be bumpy, at time dusty.Once you get to join the main highly, it becomes paved until you get to Hell’s Gate National park.

You will arrive at Lake Naivasha at 2 pm, just in good time to have lunch.Thereafter, you will have lunch an a nearby restaurant, the proceed to Hell’s Gate in Naivasha.

One of the noticable things about Tsavo is the rich reddish soil which elephants normally dust-bathe in thus giving them a red -coated look.

Some of the reasons as to why they bath on the dust is because it acts as natural sunscreen and also acts as insect repellant.

One fascinating thing about Tsavo is that it is the home to more than 10000 elephants which are clustered into groups of 50 or more.

Unlike other parks, Tsavo East is not overly crowded with vehicles. You will be able to see Zebras, impalas, Ostritches as they cross the vast plains.
