Introduction

Saabab Samburu Luxury Camp is a stunning luxury tented camp in the heart of the Samburu wilderness, perched on the edge of a river valley. The architecture of Saabab blends Swahili and Moroccan design principles, with the African heat being a primary consideration. Each of the eleven canvas-sided rooms is over 100 square meters, featuring private plunge pools and breathtaking views across the Laikipia Plateau toward the jagged peaks of Mount Kenya. Its position above the river naturally facilitates watching the herds of elephant that come to bathe below, as well as a host of other wildlife.

Accommodation and Facilities

Sabaab Luxury Camp has eleven luxury safari tents perched high above the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, each offering a serene escape in the heart of the Samburu wilderness. Each room was designed to maximize the spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Every room features a delightful private veranda with a plunge pool and sun loungers, ideal for taking in the majestic views and spotting the passing wildlife below. Guests can also enjoy rooftop stargazing beds in every room (except the Poolside Family Suite), immersing themselves in the starry brilliance of an unspoiled night sky.

The design of each of our luxury safari tents is best described as a fusion of Moroccan and Swahili styles. The canvas walls, featuring mosquito netting doors and windows, allow most of the sides to be opened up if desired, providing uninhibited views and a cooling breeze. It is worth noting that our rooms are a little more commanding than the word ‘tent’ might suggest, with high thatched roofs and cool polished concrete floors. Four-poster beds, enormous bathrooms, and private plunge pools make for a completely invigorating experience and the ultimate luxury safari accommodation in Kenya. Sasaab also features a central swimming pool, situated on the hillside overlooking the river, as well as a lap pool located in the gym.

Comprehensive recycling techniques are employed in waste management, as is the ‘Save a Bucket’ project, which reuses clean, unused shower water to irrigate the camp’s food garden. Sabaab’s dedication to conservation is further demonstrated by its collaboration with the Grevy’s Zebra Trust, which supports efforts to safeguard one of Africa’s most endangered big mammals. Additionally, the camp collaborates with the Westgate Community Conservancy to conserve wildlife habitats and foster community development.

How to get there

By road, the journey from Nairobi is around 350 kilometers long and takes 6 to 7 hours.  This route takes tourists through Nanyuki and Isiolo, with breathtaking vistas of Mount Kenya and the various landscapes of the Northern Frontier District.  Given the varied road conditions, particularly as you approach the conservancy, a 4×4 vehicle is recommended for a more comfortable drive.  Flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to the region take approximately 1.5 hours, making it a faster and more comfortable option.  Upon arrival, a road transfer is required to reach Sasaab Lodge.
