Turning 30 is not something you take for granted. Well, at least it wasn’t something small for me. Reaching the ‘third floor’ meant that I would be transitioning into a more serious phase of adulthood, matched with responsibilities and a whole set of new experiences. I needed to commemorate this new chapter of my life in a big way. One thing was for certain: I would be travelling to the Kenyan Coast for my 30th birthday getaway. A few months just before my birthday in September, I had started paying slowly for a holiday package with Adequate Safaris.
Adequate Safari’s “Lipa pole pole” scheme was amazing since I was able to comfortably pay for a birthday package. So, when September came, and it was time for my birthday, I was ready to pack my bags and go make memories that I would savor for a lifetime. And while at it, mark a new chapter of my life. How great was that! I was looking forward to having a blast for the next 5 days and 4 nights at Mombasa Beach Hotel, to be specific, soaking in the beautiful views of the sandy beaches, the striking palm trees, and stunning sunset views, while taking in the refreshing ocean breeze.

For an exceptional experience similar to mine, here are a few things to keep in mind regarding the Mombasa Beach Hotel.

Location
I was super excited to visit Nyali owing to the awe-inspiring white-sand beaches, the rich culture, proximity to local attractions, lively entertainment, and seafront relaxation. This was the exact reason I decided to stay at Mombasa Beach Hotel, which is in Nyali, Mombasa, Kenya. And for sure, Mombasa Beach Hotel was located on the shores of the Indian Ocean.
It is important to note that Mombasa is approximately 486 Km from Nairobi. Owing to the fact that I wanted to have the best experience for my birthday, I opted to travel from Nairobi to Mombasa using the SGR. Travelling to Mombasa using SGR the allowed me to enjoy the picture-perfect views of the Kenyan landscapes and the magnificent view of wildlife near Tsavo, while gradually progressing to the coastal terrain.
After a long but breathtaking and comfortable journey of about 8 and a half hours, I finally arrived at the Mombasa SGR terminus. Upon arriving at the terminus, I was greeted and warmly welcomed to Mombasa by an Adequate Safaris driver, who then transferred me to the hotel. As we drove to the hotel, the driver was very accommodating, especially in answering my never-ending questions and engaging in a friendly conversation with me, making the ride very enjoyable. I would say without fear of contradiction that the transfer experience, which was about 21.9 kms and 3 hours long from the SGR terminus to the hotel, was a ten out of ten. One more reason to book your trips or getaways with Adequate Safaris.
However, you can choose to use the flight option to travel to Mombasa. The flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the Moi International Airport in Mombasa using domestic airlines such as Kenya Airways, Jambojet, Skyward Express, and Safarilink, will take you about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The Moi International Airport is about 17 Km from the Mombasa Beach Hotel, taking you about 32 minutes to get there.
While I was looking forward to the experience at the Mombasa Beach Hotel, I was also excited about visiting the local attractions close to the hotel. On one of the days at the hotel, I decided to visit Haller Park, which is just 5 Kms away from the hotel. At Haller Park, the most interesting activity for me was feeding the giraffe and crocodiles, allowing me to see the animals upclose. I also went on a nature walk at Haller Park, allowing me to witness firsthand the beautiful transformation of the park from a quarry to a wildlife haven. Being a lover of nature, visiting Haller Park left a lasting impression on me.
On a separate day, I decided to go for a half-day visit to the Old Town and Fort Jesus, giving me the chance to learn about the inspiring history and culture of Mombasa and Kenya at large. Was it worth my time? Definitely! It is a visit that I would highly recommend for anyone visiting the Mombasa Beach Hotel and has some extra time on their hands.
Other local attractions that you can visit while staying at the Mombasa Beach Hotel for an unparalleled experience include the Mamba Village, Nyali Centre, Wild Waters, Mama Ngina Waterfront, and the nearby local markets.
Accommodation
The Adequate Safaris tour consultant had advised booking a room with an ocean view for an unmatched experience. She also informed me that the hotel has garden-facing, pool-facing, and even restaurant-facing rooms. According to the tour consultant, my room choice was supposed to be determined by the particular experience I wanted. The garden-facing rooms allow guests to enjoy the spectacular views of the hotel’s well-manicured and lush gardens. The pool-facing rooms, which also have large windows and a private balcony, ensure that guests enjoy the scenic views of the hotel’s pristine swimming pool and the Indian Ocean. On the other hand, the restaurant-facing rooms, which are in the vibrant heart of the hotel, allow guests to catch a glimpse of the Indian Ocean from their private balconies.
In line with this, I opted for a standard room with an ocean view, where I would enjoy the panoramic views of the Indian Ocean, the sea-swept breeze, and the captivating sunrise and sunset views. Waking up to views of the ocean was something I had been daydreaming about ever since I started paying for my birthday getaway with Adequate Safaris. And Alas! It was an experience like no other! Worth every single cent I had paid and even more!

When I first checked into my room, I was mesmerized by the modern amenities and furniture, and the unmatched tranquillity. One thing that I found exceptional about the ocean-facing room was the large windows and private balcony that added that extra feel of comfort and luxury. I mean! Since the hotel had gotten information that I was there to celebrate my birthday, they had thoughtfully and breathtakingly decorated my room and bed, creating the birthday mood for me and ensuring that it was not something I would forget in a hurry. True to what Adequate Safaris had promised, the room would definitely be a peaceful haven for me, from where I would have a chance to enjoy my 30th birthday while reflecting on my life.
I opted for a standard room because I was alone on the vacation and I felt the room would meet all my needs. However, other room options that you can also consider at Mombasa Beach Hotel for extra space and comfort include the Deluxe and Executive suites.
My room, which was an ocean-facing standard room, was fitted with a double bed and an extra single bed, an individually controlled air conditioner, free and reliable Wi-Fi, a working station, a Mosquito net, an ensuite washroom, a satellite TV, a coffee station (on request), a mini-fridge (on request), and a safety deposit box (on request). It is essential to note that the pool-facing, garden-facing, and restaurant-facing rooms also have similar facilities to ensure that your stay is luxurious and comfortable.
The suites, which can either be Deluxe or Executive, are the epitome of comfort and luxury, offering guests space, a balcony overlooking the Indian Ocean, a king-size or queen-size bed, and stylish furnishings. The hotel’s suites have various amenities, including an individually controlled air conditioner, free and reliable Wi-Fi, a working station, a Mosquito net, an ensuite washroom, a satellite TV, a coffee station, a mini-fridge, and a safety deposit box.
Overall, the room you select should be based on your budget and your desired experience while staying at Mombasa Beach Hotel.

Dining/Cuisine
Another exceptional aspect of my trip to the Mombasa Beach Hotel was the skilfully prepared cuisine, igniting warmth in my heart. My favorite restaurant to dine at while at the hotel was the Mombasa restaurant, which offered open-air vibes while serving delicious buffet-style Swahili cuisine. The lively entertainment during mealtime made the experience at the Mombasa restaurant even more special for me. Throughout my stay at the hotel, breakfast at the Mombasa Restaurant was served between 12.00 am and 9.30 am, lunch between 12.30 pm and 2.30 pm, and dinner from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm.

A staff member at Mombasa Beach Hotel had informed me that if I wanted to experience Ala-Carte Services, the Gazebo restaurant was the place to dine. On one of the days, I decided to dine at the Gazebo restaurant, where I got to indulge in a wide array of local and international dishes, with a personalized chef’s taste just to my liking.
I also totally enjoyed the beach-bistro Kitchen, located on the beach, where I really enjoyed an array of tasty bites, chomas, platters, mushkakis, and refreshing cold beverages, while enjoying the spectacular ocean views.
Another restaurant for guests who are into healthy living and eating is Wellness Parlor, where guests are served organic meals such as fresh juices, salads, and healthy tea, and snacks.
The hotel’s bars were also amazing. My favorite spot to hang out in the evening was the Kaskazi Bar, where I got to enjoy international and local drinks, diverse ice cream flavors, and coffee (Cappuccino and Espresso). The ambience and good music at the Kaskazi Bar were to die for. To say that I enjoyed the Kaskazi Bar is an understatement. I am yet to find better words to describe my exceptional experience there. Hanging out at the Kaskazi Bar also allowed me to make several new friends, making my birthday getaway even more special and worthwhile. It is important to note that the bar is usually open from 10.00 am to around 11 pm, allowing the guests ample time to relax and enjoy.
Other bars you can also relax and unwind at while at Mombasa Beach Hotel include the Beach Bistro Bar/Carven and the pool/Deck bar. The Beach Bistro Bar is an open-air beachfront bar that lets guests soak in the striking views of the Indian Ocean and the stroking sea-swept breeze. The Carven, which is part of the Beach Bistro Bar, is ideal for functions and parties owing to its enclosed cave-like design. The Craven is well-equipped with a kitchen, conveniently meeting the guests’ needs. The Beach Bistro/ Carven is open daily between 10.00 am and 8.00 pm. The pool/Deck Bar is at the hotel’s poolside and has a stunning sun deck, offering guests awe-inspiring views of the ocean. The Pool/Deck Bar is open every day between 10.00 am and 6.00 pm.

Some of the facilities that I found exemplary at the hotel included a safe deposit box, the gift shop, business centre, the salon and spa, high-speed Wi-Fi, and laundry services. These facilities and services ensured my 5-day 4-night stay at Mombasa Beach Hotel was lavish. Other facilities and services that you can enjoy at the hotel include free parking, a 24-hour on-call doctor, and forex exchange.
I also found that the hotel has executive conference rooms, which are spacious, well-equipped, and perfect for seminars, business meetings, conferences, corporate events, and workshops. In the executive conference rooms, the hotel offers dynamic set-ups, ensuring participants feel supported and comfortable for sustained focus and engagement.
Activities
My stay at Mombasa Beach Hotel ensured I indulged in “Mombasa Raha” experiences. For instance, on days I was in the hotel all day, I enjoyed participating in water sports such as snorkelling, jet skiing, and windsurfing, getting an opportunity to enjoy the jaw-dropping Indian Ocean waters against the cool breeze. My favorite beach game to play in the afternoons was beach volleyball. While playing these games, I got the opportunity to mingle with other guests and make new friends, leading to unforgettable memories for me. Other evenings, I would go on leisure walks along the beach, taking every opportunity to enjoy the spectacular views all around.
The spa treatment is definitely one that I won’t forget in a hurry. Everything from the authentic natural oils to the picturesque decor in the spa was definitely worth experiencing. It was nothing short of exceptional.
The dining experience at the hotel was also unmatched. The perfect blend of local and international dishes was not only designed to satisfy the taste buds but also propel a journey into diverse cultures and heritages, and in particular, the Swahili one.
