Start your journey from Nairobi early in the morning, around 6:30–7:00 AM. Drive toward Mount Kenya via Thika and Embu (for the Chogoria route) or through Karatina and Naro Moru (if you’re heading to the western side). The drive takes about 4–5 hours, depending on the route and road conditions. Once you arrive, check into a lodge or camp near the park gate—popular options include Serena Mountain Lodge, Naro Moru River Lodge, or Castle Forest Lodge (on the Chogoria side).
In the afternoon, go for a guided nature walk in the lower forest zone or explore the Mount Kenya National Park gate area, where you’ll enjoy fresh air, waterfalls, birds, and possibly wildlife like colobus monkeys or bushbucks. Some lodges also offer forest walks, trout fishing, or short hikes along scenic trails. End the day with dinner and relaxation at your lodge, surrounded by the cool mountain atmosphere.
Wake up early to the sounds of the forest and enjoy a hearty breakfast. Depending on your fitness level and interest, take a half-day hike up the lower slopes of Mount Kenya with a certified local guide. Options include a trek to Mackinder’s Camp (if starting very early from Naro Moru Gate and you’re well-acclimatized), or shorter hikes to viewpoints like Mau Mau Caves, Magura Falls, or the Temple in the Rock. You’ll get breathtaking views of the surrounding forest and mountain terrain.
After the hike, return to your lodge, freshen up, and begin your scenic drive back to Nairobi in the early afternoon. Optional lunch stops include Trout Tree Restaurant near Nanyuki or a local spot in Karatina or Sagana. You’ll arrive back in Nairobi by early evening, feeling refreshed and recharged from your highland adventure.
